Ocean City Adult Community Education

Basic First Aid

Program participants learn to recognize the

signs and symptoms of injuries and sudden

illness. Crucial information is shared about

how to deal with emergencies like bleeding,

shock, burns, strains, fractures, allergic reactions,

diabetic and seizures. Class includes:

Basic Self-Defense

This basic self-defense course will teach the

student self-defense awareness, stance,

hand position(s), patterns of movement,

ground defense techniques, rape prevention,

standing defenses, strikes, blocks, kicks,

break falls, defenses from chokes & grabs

etc. The self-defense course is a variation of

techniques from disciplines such as Israeli

Krav Maga, Jiu-Jitsu, Karate, and Boxing.

This self-defense course will increase ones

fitness, awareness level, as well as provide

the student with techniques to defend oneself

from various attacks.

Basics of Saltwater Fly Tying

Learn several popular saltwater fly tying patterns.

Designed for beginners who are looking

to understand the basics of fly tying.

There will be a nominal fee (in addition to the

class fee) to cover the cost of fly tying material.

Fly tying equipment is available; however,

if you have your own equipment, you

are encouraged to bring it to class. Class

participants may also take classroom-tying

equipment home to practice between sessions.

The instructor was the saltwater fly

fishing field editor and contributing writer for

the Fisherman magazine and taught several

fly fishing classes for various educational

organizations.

Beginners Bridge

This class is for inexperienced or recently

new bridge players and designed to present

the fundamentals of bidding, play and defense.

Boat Smart Course

A course for all boaters including personal

watercraft operators; hunters or fishermen

operating an outboard utility boat; canoe and

kayak paddlers; skippers of a family cruiser;

and sailing enthusiasts. All boaters must

follow the same nautical rules, regulations,

and courtesies of the sea. Includes boat

terms & types, boat handling, anchoring,

water sport safety, personal watercraft,

equipment, regulations, law enforcement,

aids to navigation, navigation rules, adverse

conditions and marine radios. The course

meets the educational standards of the National

Association of State Boating Law Administrators

and features a proctored examination

as required by many states & insurance

companies. All nights must be attended

to qualify for the NJ State Police license.

Chair Yoga

Chair yoga is for people of all ages regardless

of your physical condition. Chair Yoga is

for office workers, travelers, or folks with

limited mobility. Seated yoga postures can

be practiced anywhere you can sit. Come

experience the numerous benefits of yoga:

increased strength and flexibility, increased

circulation, better sleep, increased energy.

You will learn breathing and relaxation techniques

that you can practice throughout your

life for greater well being.

Community & Workplace CPR/AED

Provides individuals with the basic knowledge

and skills necessary to provide effective

basic life support in an emergency. This

class is intended for individuals who do not

work in the healthcare field but have a desire

to have CPR knowledge and skills, Those

individuals include but not limited to citizens,

businesses, organizations, child care workers,

teachers, parents and babysitters.

Class includes: Student work book, Pocket

Mask and Certification Card (good for two

years)

Disaster Preparedness

Throughout time mankind has been dealing

with the threat of disaster. Disasters come in

two forms, natural or manmade. Sometimes

disasters can strike without warning. Your

only defense is your ability to be prepared.

The Disaster Preparedness program

helps you prepare for a disaster & devise a

strategy that encompasses the necessary

steps that must be taken before, during &

after a disaster. Class includes: Completion

certificate

Dog Treats

Surprise your four-legged friends with a selection

of delicious treats! This is a hands-on

class where you’ll bake the treats yourself,

plus get extra recipes to try-out at home.

You’ll also learn about foods that are the

best (and worst) for your furry friend. Plus, a

portion of the supply fee, for the class, is a

donation for the Humane Society of Ocean

City. Don’t forget a container to take home

your treats!

Entrepreneurship

This course will cover how to begin as small

business, as well as, the necessary tools for

the business progression. Individuals who

wish to begin a business or for those who

already are involved and wish to have a better

understanding of the working of a small

business.

Guitar

Learn how to play standard chords and

scales while gaining a knowledge of players

from the past and present. This class

will also cover how to practice effectively

in order to promote future progress with

the instrument, and basic guitar and instrument

maintenance.

Holiday Baking

Curious about the best way to turn holiday

baking into a gift? You’ll learn about

some of the best recipes for gift-giving

and the options on how to wrap your

goodies. You will also get to bake a

cookie and a batch of peppermint bark to

bring home. Be sure to bring an apron and

container for your holiday treats.

Icing 101

Learn how to make three basic icings –

sugar cookie glaze, classic butter cream

and marshmallow fondant. You will create

and experiment with each icing, learning

some basic decorating techniques along

the way. Bring an apron and a container to

take home all of the goodies you create.

Introduction to Computers 1

This hands-on class will teach students the

basics of using common computer programs

such as Microsoft Word and Excel,

and tips and tricks for proper usage of the

internet. From Google to spell check to

shortcuts, this class will cover all the basics

of using your computer to the absolute best.

Introduction to Computers 2

A continuation of Introduction to Computers

(1), for those who have taken the previous

course either last spring or this fall, or anyone

with a basic knowledge of computers…

but not much more. The course focuses

more on Microsoft Office programs such as

Word and Excel, but will also feature more

advanced tricks for web surfing & computer

security. If you need to know more than the

absolute basics, this is the course.

Jewelry!

Just in time for the Holidays! Learn all the

basic techniques in making jewelry in a 3

National Safety Council’s

Defensive Driving Class

This course provides drivers with the knowledge

and driving techniques to prevent

collisions and violations. Participants that

complete the class receive a 5% discount in

the liability portion of their auto insurance,

good for 3 years and 2 points removed from

their driving record.

Photoshop Techniques and Tips

Explore Adobe Photoshop to create fine art

images that you can frame, hang or give as

Holiday gifts. Learn how to make use of the

many hidden features within this graphically

unlimited software by creating digital images

based upon your photographs or hand

drawn images. Become an airbrush artist.

Retouch photos to enhance their beauty.

Become a surrealist. Learn to use transparent

layers. Lessons will wrap around

each students desires and interests. Please

bring CD copies of your current digital images

that you’d like to convert into artwork.

(realistic digital oil paintings, graphics or

watercolors) as well as samples of others

work that you admire. Note: Intro to Photoshop

may be helpful but is NOT required.

Round Reed Basketry

This is the year to learn something new! A

basket base woven from hand-dyed rattan

reed will be provided to enable each student

to begin learning basic techniques

while weaving and designing. The experienced

student has the option to create his/

her own base. You will make the decisions:

technique, color and shape as the work

progresses and will complete a small colorful

basket. No two will be alike. This class

is for beginners and those wanting to renew

or expand basketry skills. Returning students

are welcome!
